Spurge - a horrible invader

New Town Rivulet

Tuesday 13 April 2021

The Friends of Wellington Park gained a grant to remove weeds dominated by blackberry and revegetate the site. This was the second major maintenance day and there were a lot of weeds to remove, particularly caper spurge.

Some of the spurge was hidden beneath bracken fern which made it easy to miss seeing them. Others in the more open areas were growing quite densely together making for slow work. The soil however was mostly soft and friable, allowing us to easily pull the spurge out. Mullein was present, in one area in particular, and again it was easy to remove. Some hemlock was removed where close to the new native plants and wherever blackberry was found it was treated with a herbicide.

Most of the new native plants were growing well and a few needed their tree guards removed as they were high above the top.

Whilst working, Kelly managed to discover several fungi and they are in the photo gallery at this webpage.

The City of Hobart provided a most appreciated morning tea.
