Glen Dhu Erica

 Tuesday 12 April 2022

This was both a walk and a site check for weeds, but in reality, it was more a weeding expedition. That was in part due to this being a solo walk and sticking to the track was the safer, rather than heading bush to return over Collins Cap. As I found lots of Erica (Spanish Heath) and elected to get as much out as time allowed, that I felt like I had insufficient energy to nor time to do the alternate return route anyway.

On the return walk I enjoyed a fabulous chorus of Black Currawongs. It commenced whilst puffing up the Glen Dhu track and was continuous  for the 30 minutes until I dropped to about the 750m altitude. There seemed to be so many of them, often quite close. It was really such a lovely experience I decided to record some, although it was past the peakit took  noise accompaniment by then.

As for the Erica, there were 3 main spots located, plus an odd one and there along the lower section of the old fire track. I managed to remove all of those until the lowest patch, where there was time for about a third of them. As it appeared that none have flowered since the last visit in 2018, it would be good to remove those remaining fairly soon. Going on the height of the plants they almost certainly would flower this season. It would be quicker to get to these by coming in from Nicholls Road.

  1. Good on you Peter. Wish I was there too. Sounds relaxing. Pulling Spanish heath while being serenaded by currawongs...
